Is Your Website Too Slow For Google?

Google announced, last week, that it’s now factoring site speed in to its algorithm for determining search results. If you want to rank well you need a fast site, or at least you need a site that’s faster than your competition.

You certainly want your site to do well in the Google rankings. The higher you rank for highly trafficked searches the more leads you’re going to generate. The last thing you want is for your slow site to cause your rankings to decline as Google updates its results.

Google is doing the right thing for its customers. It makes sense for fast sites to rank well because site visitors will have a better experience. They won’t get frustrated waiting for pages to come up on their screens. Ultimately, Google wants happy searchers.

A multitude of factors impact site speed and it isn’t always easy to improve. You’ve got to do some tinkering and lots of testing to speed up the site. It’s probably a job for your web developer. Your mission is to (1) check and see how your site is performing and (2) pester your website person and get them moving if things seem slow.

You can see how your site is performing by visiting Google’s Webmaster Tools or by conducting a free test on a site like WebSiteOptimization.com. Both sites will give you guidance on how you can speed things up. Remember, you don’t need to have a blazingly fast site, you need only be faster than the competition.
