An upset client called me last week. He was freaking out. All I could hear were angry, irate, upset words. His rant involved social security numbers, email, encryption and security. He was talking high-tech gibberish and I was only understanding about every fourth word.
Turns out that one of our lawyers sent him an email with a draft pleading attached for his review. The document had social security numbers included in it as required for certain pleadings in North Carolina. We sent the email to his personal email account from our firm email account.
He was angry that we sent the email via the internet and it wasn’t encrypted. He worried that his social security number might be captured by an evil-doer and used to steal his identity or wreak havoc with him in some other way. His work involves network security and he knows far more than I’ll ever know about security concerns relating to the internet.
A few days later, at ABA Techshow, I stumbled across Dialawg. They were exhibitors. They’re all about securing email from end to end. They’ve designed an idiot proof system that’s easy to use and amazingly secure. They spend their time figuring out how to stay one step ahead of the bandits so you don’t have to worry. They are seriously serious about security.
What I love about their system is how easy it is to use. They integrate right in with your existing system. You can use your current system for regular email and their system for secure email. If you accidentally send a secure email to someone who isn’t prepared to receive it, they let you know immediately so you can resend on your regular system.
Their service isn’t cheap. Well, that isn’t true. It is cheap, it just isn’t cheap compared to what we’re used to paying for email accounts. They charge $95 per month, per user for unlimited secure email. That struck me as expensive, but a small price to pay to protect client confidentiality and have happy clients. There is, however, a MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE option.
If I just want to make that one, security conscious, upset client happy, I can do it for only $5 per month. Sweet. We’ll blow that guy away when I tell him what we’re doing. If I can avoid screaming for $5 I am totally in – totally.
Dialawg integrates with Outlook, Blackberry and even the iPhone. They have a voicemail system with message transcription as well. My discussion with their CEO made it clear that they bend over backwards to design a service that meets your needs. If you don’t specifically find a solution offered on their website you should ask them for help. They impressed me with their flexibility.
Check out the video below to get a feel for how simple their system is to use. It makes sense for all client email. It absolutely makes sense for that client that’s already worried about security.
