How to Find an Alternative to that Expensive Software

I’d like to have a copy of Adobe Photoshop CS4 for tweaking my family photos. Unfortunately, it costs about $600 per copy.

Isn’t there something like Photoshop that I can use that will work pretty well and cost a lot less? What about alternatives to Norton Security or Microsoft Office?
