Free Noise

simplynoiseI work in an open environment. We all have desks but we don’t have individual offices. Think “newsroom”. It can be noisy. That’s part of what I like about it, but that can be a problem when focus is required.

SimplyNoise.com is the solution. I pop in my earbuds or my headphones and visit their site. They provide free noise in several varieties. They have white noise, pink noise and brown noise. You can make the noise oscillate in volume (think oscillating fan) and you can increase or decrease the volume manually as well.

Open your browser, navigate to SimplyNoise, select your favorite type of noise, set the volume and leave that tab open while you do other things. Your brain quickly adapts to the sound and it covers up whatever is happening in the background. Give your brain a minute or two to adapt and see what you think. It works for me. It’s even more valuable when I’m working form home and my kids are around (like now). I find that I can use it without the headphones, on my laptop, and it drowns them out very effectively.

You may want to experiment with the site and try it in different ways at different times. It might even be useful to you when you’re going to sleep. I have a headset from SleepPhones that is fantastic. I can wear it to bed and roll over without having earbuds poking me in the head.

Whether your in an open environment or in an office where you can close the door, you may find SimplyNoise fills a need in your life. At a minimum, bookmark the site for future reference – just in case things get noisy.
